Welcome to the Fitbit community, @SunsetRunner!

Sad to hear that you're having issues with your Versa 4.
I'd like to point out that although your device can track exercises automatically, you'll have to start exercises manually to use GPS. For more on that I'd suggest having a closer look here:

How do I track my activity with my Fitbit device?

How do I use GPS on my Fitbit device?

I see you got good help but I had already read about the manual start for GPS.  So today I did that with a "walk" and at the end got a nice map of the walk with a breakdown by section on this and that.  Nice feature.

Using gps does eat up battery time.  My 1.5 hour walk took it from 100% to 90

its worth it

I think I found the solution to my issue. In recent weeks the GPS results have been erratic. I now believe it's because I had my phone in battery save mode so the Versa relied on its own less reliable GPS instead linking to the phone. Today I got the correct results with battery saved off.

A few days ago I did a walk with the the Versa and didn’t take the iPhone along.  I got decent GPS results.  The only noticeable thing was once in a while the GPS track obviously wandered off the actual roadway I was on but not enough to invalidate the path.

Noticing that using the GPS the distance was 4.2 miles.  However logging the same type activity a couple days later yielded the distance at 3.9ish miles.
