So I finally received the new firmware update for my Fitbit Versa 4. This adds quite a few long awaited festures and is quite an upgrade: GPS accuracy improvements, more auto recognized workouts, screen magnification, etc. What I was most curious about was the Google machine learning heart rate algorithm that was also introduced into this update: This is the same algorithm used in the Pixel and Charge 6 and is rated to be extremely accurate.
I also own an Apple Watch (Series 9) and Apple is known for extreme heart rate accuracy. My Apple Watch usually shows my heart rate as being 5-10 beats less than my Versa 4. Since the update the two devices are now on par with one another. (I have not however tested exercise)
Considering Fitbit uses heart rate for sleep I decided to wear both last night to see how closely they align. Usually Fitbit tends to register more deep and awake stages than Apple Watch (as to which is more accurate is hard to say)
I was surprised to see that stages aligned with one another quite closely. The only major difference being awake with the Fitbit showing more time in the awake stage.

Hi there @SunsetRunner and a warm welcome in the Fitbit Community!
I really do appreciate your information and your opinion about the firmware update of your Versa 4.
When your heart beats, your capillaries expand and contract based on blood volume changes. To determine your heart rate, the optical heart-rate sensor in your Fitbit device flashes its green LEDs many times per second and uses light-sensitive photodiodes to detect these volume changes in the capillaries above your wrist. Then your device calculates how many times your heart beats per minute. The technology Fitbit uses is different from other brands, this is why the data may vary.
