Data is not available via the Fitbit API until the device syncs.

No, Fitbit devices sync on their own schedule (every 15 minutes) and when the person is interacting with the Fitbit app. This is to provide the longest battery life possible for the device.

Is this true even for sleep data?
Can I get the total number of minutes asleep, while the user is sleeping, or does it upload the entire log only after the user has woken up (assuming the fitbit was syncing every 15 minutes during the entire length of the nap)?

The sleep log is not available until the first sync after the person wakes up.

I see. So then, is there any way to determine if the user is asleep or not? Is there a flag that I can keep checking?
