We are supporting a well-known Company to run a study on patients affected by haemophilia. In order to study the effect of several drugs on the physical capacity of these patients, your Fitbit Versa device is used.
More in detail, from your device, the following data are extracted:
- Overall active minutes
- Active minutes Sedentary Stages
- Active minutes Slightly Active Stage
- Active minutes Fairly Active Stage
We have read that your Fitbit device calculates active minutes through metabolic equivalents (METs). This metric, which factors in body mass, is used to estimate exercise intensity.
However, we should know more about the method for defining the above classes. We do not need to know all details of your algorithm, but we should know at least how these classes are identified. Are METs the only element to define these classes? If so, which are the MET thresholds for each class?
We also should know whether the variable ”Active minutes sedentary activity” can be considered “activity” or not and if the variable “Overall active minutes” is the sum of the other three variables listed above or it is the sum of the last two variables only.
This information is key for allowing the Sponsor of the study to present the data in congresses, papers, submissions to Regulatory Authority, etc. In particular, the results of this study will be submitted to AIFA, the Italian Regulatory Authority, in September.
Can you please help us clarifying the above?
Thanks a lot for your support.

In case you haven't come across it, this help article, https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1379.htm describes how active minutes are calculated and its relationship to METs. Please review and let me know if you have any further questions.

It appears from the Fitbit answer this question was ignored. Did you ever get info on Fitbit active minutes & METS?

Hi @OldSoftware
Thank you for bringing this to my attention. It appears the link provided had a typo that didn't take you to the help article. I have fixed it in the previous reply. You can also click https://help.fitbit.com/articles/en_US/Help_article/1379.htm to see it.

I was not able to find the details on different "activeness" levels and METs in the linked article. Can you help by directing me to a particular section?
Thank you!

Hi @ADZ123
I'm not sure if the article has changed based on the original question since this post is several years old and we don't own the content. Check the section "How does my Fitbit device calculate active minutes?" to see if that answers your question.
