Please check out if there is proper contact between the battery and the battery contacts inside your Zip as @vomitofthemind mentions here. Additionally, you can perform a restart to your Zip tracker by following @Odyssey13 steps. Hope this helps.
In the meantime, if it's necessary, you can add steps to your account by manually logging activities like Walking, Running or Hiking.
