After my steps were synced (about 20,600 something), I logged my workout. Once that was saved my step reduced to 1658. That a big jump. I worked hard for those steps. What happened?

They key here is on the knowing the workout,  we would need to know what type of workout and how you logged it. Most manual logged activities overwrite the fitbits, removal of the log should restore the steps.

I'll try that. Thanks.

I would be interested in knowing what type of activity and how it was logged.

I logged my strength training (which fitbit recognizes as weights) as well as my walking duration in the "log activity" feature on my mobile. Prior to that my fitbit had already synced the recorded steps, about 20,664 (somewhere around there). After I logged my workout those steps were replaced with whatever my logged workout estimated.
