I am not in any challenges but keep getting the error message I have reached the max.

A warm welcome to the Community @Jcole754. If you are getting an error at the moment of joining a challenge, I recommend logging out and logging back in to your account. After that, please try to create one challenge.

Thanks for the tip, however, it did not work. I have tried logging out, deleting the app and also setting up my Fitbit from the beginning again. Nothing has worked.
