Auto recognize a workout

Hi everyone I am curious

Does Fitbit only count the steps in that workout when it auto recognizes a workout or will it count the steps in the workout before it auto recognize?

I have mine set to auto recognize a workout after 15 min so before that 15 min any steps or data i get do not go towards that workout right?  I'm assuming it's only after it auto recognizes?

I can only speak to auto-recognized walks, but I have found that all steps are counted towards your daily totals, both those in the actual walk exercise that is booked as well as the steps during the recognition period, and the steps tracked after the auto-recognition period (45 seconds to 1:15 in my observations) are also assigned to the walk exercise.

Keep in mind that the auto-recognized period may extend out a little further that you may think. In the case of walks, if you stop for less than 30 seconds (maybe longer) and then start to walk, even if it is just general walking and not something with "purpose", your "walk" exercise my be extended to cover that period, as well.

How much of my "walk" tests apply to your auto-recognized workouts I cannot say. I only suggest, for your own peace of mind and discovery that the next time you think a workout might be auto-recognized, make note of the total steps for the day and then the same total after your workout. Compare the calculated total step count and the amount of steps in the exercise record and see if the workout steps are a sub-set of the total.

Good luck.
