I have a Fitbit 3 - despite adjusting settings for brightness - options are normal or auto, I can barely read the screen because it is dark. Is there anything else I can do?

Thanks for every step tried prior to posting. You've done a good. To look into this, could you confirm if you have the Charge 3? Or is the issue with a Versa 3?
In the meantime, let me explain that most of our Fitbit devices have a Sleep Mode and when this setting is on, the screen's brightness is set to dim and it won't turn on when moving your wrist. To check this setting, please follow the steps described here and restart your Fitbit device to refresh its performance.
