I can find the Add new Group tab, I open it, put all the required information but the 'CREATE' button (top right) just does not activate. Is that a glitch and can you create a new Group using the desktop (if so, please provide link?)

Hello @Seasonsincolour and a warm welcome.  Did you add a picture?  The "Create" button becomes active after you add a picture.

 

These groups are app only and there is no way to create or access an existing one on the desktop.
