Your fitbit calculates distance my multiplying your step count by your stride length so if the distance is too low either your fitbit is missing steps or your stride length is too small.
If you're not certain about the accuracy of the step count you could do a test where you count out 100 steps and see how many your fitbit says.
Assuming the steps are reasonable then it has to be a problem with your stride. Your fitbit uses a default length (actually two: one for walking, one for running) that's calculated from your profile settings (mainly height) so it's worth checking that your settings are correct: https://www.fitbit.com/user/profile/edit
