When tracking exercise, like a walk or run, there is no way to see the number of steps you are at when you look at your iPhone. You can only see your time per mile, how many miles covered, and elapsed time. Since we are all about step counting the current daily step number should be on this screen.

Hello @SouthernDad and I've seen you are new around here, so welcome aboard to our community. Indeed, so far is not possible to see how many steps you have while you are doing your walk/run activity. Note that your tracker is in charge to keep the step count, however it will not display only the steps you have on this activity but your total count. This information is displayed until you synced your information and the activity is uploaded on your activity history.
I recommend to read this suggestion from one of the community users, there is an interesting idea similar to your request: https://community.fitbit.com/t5/Feature-Requests/Combine-HR-and-GPS-Info-for-Charge-HR/idi-p/773397
Hope this helps and see ya around.
