Fitbit Update 5/22/2019:

Hey all,

Today we've released the latest Fitbit for iOS app version 2.94. In this new app version, we've temporarily disabled this notification "Open Fitbit to keep your data synchronized." We will continue to assess all the user feedback and work to improve this experience.

Please update the Fitbit app if you haven't yet. I'm now closing this thread from further comments. Thanks again for all your feedback!

Fitbit Update 5/13/2019:

Hi Everyone- Based on customer feedback, we are working on an update to the notification and hope to have further information to share soon. We appreciate your patience and thank you for your feedback.

Fitbit Update 4/18/2019:

I've merged a few threads together. Receiving the notification "Open Fitbit to keep your data synchronized" after closing out of the Fitbit app is expected behavior. The Fitbit app needs to run in the background in order to enable features like all-day sync and notifications. If you are double tapping the home button, or swiping up into multi-tasking, and then swiping to close the app, you should see this message.

I appreciate your feedback and have passed it on to the team. I hear that you are unhappy with this notification. Our team is aware, but may not be able to provide a fix in the immediate future.

We'll continue to monitor the situation, and keep our team informed of the impact to you and other customers. We understand that this isn't the resolution you're hoping for, but rest assured we're always working to improve our products. We're sorry for any trouble.

The only other time I received a message that I had to keep the app open was when I was mountain biking and I wanted it to track my progress geographically on a map.

I get that.

I’m a software developer and this is an unwanted feature that should be removed

What if you don’t want that notification at all?

This just started happening to me as well and it’s really annoying. Please fix this.

NOT expected behavior.

You shouldn’t though. This is obnoxious. I’ve had no problem using my Fitbit or the app in the past. It’s not a good user experience to get a notification every time I close the app. It’s not making me want to keep the app open

unnecessarily. It’s making me not want to use the app at all.

This isn’t a “it’s going to take us a few weeks to find a fix for this” situation. It should be a “We had someone disable the message until we find a new, less annoying way to tell you we want you to always have our app running”.

I was having the same issue. I have a Versa and iPhone XR, so I don’t know if this will work with Blaze-I held down the left button on my Blaze and options for Screen Wake and Notifications comes up. Somehow, my notifications had been turned off. I switched it back on and now I’m getting notifications from texts and other apps again.

I found a way that turns it off:

close the app

as soon as the notification appears click on it

three dots should appear on the upper right corner -> click

2 options will appear: stop receiving or silence

worked for me!

Good luck all and keep fit! 🙂

anabianca_marin, does selecting to silence that notification make ALL notifications from the Fitbit App disappear?

The problem for me is that I like some of the notifications the app sends, so I don't want to silence or stop all notifications. Just this stupid one about keeping the app open.

Hey!

I really don’t know... but I’m with you! I’d like to receive some other notifications... for now, I have decided that I’d rather not receive ANY, if thats the only way from stopping that annoying one.

Funny thing is that my other notifications are still ticked on (in settings). So, I have to wait and see if I’ll get any of those.

I’m certain you can find a way to get rid of this very annoying notification. My satisfaction with my Fitbit Versa just dropped significantly. Looking forward to restoring it when it has been fixed.

I appreciate your response. It is frustrating now though to know that this is an “intended” function from the FitBit team and was somehow bizarrely determined to be an improvement or addition worthy of inclusion in the most recent app update.  Please take it away. No one in their right mind is going to leave the FitBit app open and running on their phone all day long. It’s preposterous. I can guarantee that those who do leave it open and running don’t need an automated reminder to do so. For the rest of us sane and fitBit faithful though, it is tone deaf and annoying.

This is absolutely unacceptable. You shoved this very unwanted feature down our throats without notice. You can revert easily. It should not take long at all.

I believe you’ve just lost me as a customer. Not that you probably give a **ahem**.

Same happened to me after clean up. It’s so annoying! Don’t really understand why it was put in the update if by the looks of things noone asked for it.

Just adding to this thread to affirm how incredibly redundant and annoying this notification is. I get the intent. But the fact that it literally displays every time you close the app is excessive and absurd. Most users know they need to have Fitbit open for syncing, it’s common sense. And even if they don’t, I certainly can’t imagine that they need to be reminded EVERY single time they close the app. Lol. Super annoying. I love my Fitbit, but I’m literally just going to turn off notifications altogether. Major misstep on this one. Love everything you all do, but gotta be honest.

How is this expected behavior for the app when it has never needed to be open in the background to be able to function before? That's why in settings we have background refresh turned on. I've always been able to check in, then force close the app with no sync issues. However, now I receive this notification, and my calls and texts do not come through to my device.

Possibly unrelated, but turning my wrist to check the time also does not work, only tapping the screen does.

It's not common sense though? I've never had to have the app open in the background before in other to ensure the sync function works.

I was actually referring to those who do not have “all-day sync” toggled on. So, yes, in that case, I’d imagine common sense would inform them that they needed to have the app open for syncing. From what I can tell, the new update requires the app to be open. So while those with all-day sync didn’t have to have it open before, we do now. I get that frustration, but it’s separate from the notification issue.
