I had a friend request, which I accepted,  from a lady with no activity at all.  Just started dialog with “hello”, and I responded back that I was nearly certain it was a scam of some kind, but I would learn more if she kept messaging me.   She did message me, said she was offended, just wanted suggestions on losing weight (“her” weight was listed as 136 lbs), and that I was wrong for thing it a scam.

Ive read a little about this, why are there scammers on here- is it because users list their birthdate, and they try to fish for friends to obtain that?  As a result I’ve changed my Birthday to something false.   Why does Fitbit even ask ones birthday?

Hello @CMcCarl.  Welcome to the Fitbit forums.

You can control who gets access to which parts of your personal data.

See the following help article:

Who can see my personal information?

Age is used to estimate maximum heart rate.

It is also used in sleep statistics to allow you to compare yourself to others your age group.

Those are 2 places off the top of my head, there could be others, perhaps could be a factor in estimating stride length.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.

@CMcCarl Sorry to hear that you've been receiving friend requests and messages from unknown people. I recommend declining or blocking those people.

It's up to you to decide what your Fitbit friends will see of your profile. You can configure those settings under "Privacy" on your Dashboard: http://www.fitbit.com/user/profile/privacy. You can configure your privacy settings to decide specifically which details are shared. You can choose to share with everyone, exclusively with friends, or keep items completely private so that only you can see them.

I recommend protecting your password and making sure it is a secure password that is not easily identified. Check out this help article for more information on how to protect your account and what Fitbit is doing to protect you.
