Hello @SunsetRunner, I hope you're having a great day, it's nice to see you around. 
Is this the first time you've experienced this situation? It's possible that your friend synced his tracker after you synced yours which explains the increase in steps on his side. Please remember that challenges do not take in consideration manually logged activities, therefore even if your friend logged one, this wouldn't count.
Additionally, please take in consideration that sometimes it takes up to 15 minutes for the leader-board to reflect the information your friends have just synced.
