not used device (Fitbit Alta) for a few days. Charged it and synced it but steps now not showing on Macbook or I phone dashboards. Have powered off and on again - no joy. Any thoughts

Try a restart as listed here, If that doesn't work remove the Fitbit from your account and add it again.
