Treadmill distance vs Fitbit distance

How can I close the data gap when I do a treadmill run? I've started to regularly run 5/10k on a treadmill but if I set my Fitbit to treadmill setting it's showing as only half the distance travelled (this morning I completed 5miles/8km but it showed as less than 3miles on my treadmill workout).  When I do a simiilarly timed free run the distance shown on Fitbit is much more accurate to the treadmills distance so there's a definite discrepancy between the distances run as a free run and on the treadmill.

Your stride is totally different on the treadmill. It will never match your outdoor stride.

That doesn't necessarily make sense as an answer though as my time for an outdoor run of 5k is the same as a treadmill run which means my pace must be similar, if my pace is similar the number of steps I take has to be similar too...certainly not over a mile difference iykwim?
