I found the answer!! You have to have text previews turned on! I have an iPhone XS...
setting > notifications > messages > Turn message preview to always (Default)
It took me 3 weeks and endless hours on the phone with Fitbit doing resets and factory resets and uninstalling the app and reinstalling. The setting were all good but this was never given as a suggestion.. My 12 year old figured it out!
