Where is the distance metrics in workouts?

I’m shocked that there’s no way to see distance in my run? Why do I care for steps? Steps is not a unit! In my workout it shows I ran for 25 min.  Heart rate all that.  Where are the miles? And why do I need to write this. This is so dumb obvious

Research. Research. Research. Unless your device has an integrated GPS it cannot gather the appropriate information to match a route to your run or calculate with any authority how far you ran. Now to me, that is obvious.

I suspect that the device attempted to estimate the mileage of your run and it is incorporated into the total miles for day, just not for the specific period associated with the activity. If the device/app did, then people would be screaming because the estimate would be wrong and this is normally because an individual's running step length is incorrect or they tired during the run, taking small length strides making the app overstate the length of the run.

No, I suspect Fitbit didn't depend on estimating mileage on a run because the screams from people would be a lot louder than if they decided to depend on GPS for mileage.

There may still be options available to you so that you can indeed get a mileage associated with the activity; I do and my device has no integrated GPS.

What device do you have?

Apple Watch 6 - iPhone 8 (iOS 16.7.8) - FitBit app 4.20 - MacBook Air (macOS Catalina)
