Ace 2 side button not waking the screen

For several months my daughter has been madly tapping the face of the watch to ‘wake it’.  This does wake it every so often….. but makes the watch use very frustrating:  everything else on the watch is working.

Could it be the mechanics of the button?  How can I fix / diagnose?
