So I’ve had my Alta for about a year or so and I love it. Recently when I’m wearing it, the thing randomly shuts off? I have to plug it back in to get it to turn back on, and it’s always almost fully charged. Usually when this happens im not at home, so a whole days worth of steps are lost. How do I stop this ?

Welcome to the Fitbit Community @Jekca. I am sorry for the delayed response.
I appreciate your participation in the Forums and sharing the issue you're experiencing with your Fitbit Alta which randomly shuts off. I understand that you love your tracker and would like to continue using it and working on your goals. If you haven't done so, I'd like you to restart your tracker as described in this help article. This will refresh your device internally.
If you would like to manually log your activity, please follow these steps: How do I manually log exercises in the Fitbit app?
Please keep me posted.

This issue is still happening, and I was never contacted by support on how to deal with it.
I love Fitbit, but I’m pretty disappointed about never hearing back.
