Alta only working when on charger

I just received a Fitbit Alta today for Christmas and haven’t been able to get it working off the charging cable. I’ve been able to charge it, toggle between the screens, sync to my phone etc but only while connected to the charger.

As soon as it’s disconnected from the USB cable nothing works. I tap it to wake up and nothing... can not connect it to my phone etc... 

I’ve tried the reboot option multiple times of pressing the charge cable 3 times and this hasn’t made any difference.

Did I get a dud??

The same thing happened to me. I have two Alta Fitbit that are dead once taken out of the charger.
