Alta won't charge

I'm trying to do the set up on my mums fitbit alta. It's never been used apart from an attempt at set up (the device powered on back then) and been stored correctly in its original box the last few years. The charging interface does not appear to be working. The screen does nothing when I plug it in (tried with computer usb port and multiple wall chargers). The reset button trick (pressing x3 on the charging cord) does absolutely noting either. As far as I can see the charging pins align correctly and it seems to lock in place well. I've tried to sync the device to my own account and it can't find it. Clearly charging is the issue but I don't understand why a device that has never been used cannot be charged. Exploring all avenues before fully accepting the disappointment that a device that has never been used can break by doing nothing at all. Thanks!

Hi, @TBrenn , unfortunately all rechargeable batteries will degrade over time even if they are never used are never recharged (in fact, they are likely to last longer if they are regularly recharged rather than left stored uncharged).  Sadly this is just one of the laws of physics and how batteries work.  This is called “self-discharge” and applies to all batteries.  Over time they will deteriorate so much that they become unusable.

The Alta is a very old device in electronic terms and it is not surprising given that it has never been kept charged that it is now unusable.

I am so sorry not to have better news for you!

If you are thinking of upgrading to a new device you may want to get in touch with Fitbit Customer Support on Contact.Fitbit.com and let them know that your mum’s Alta is no longer useable .  I know that they are sometimes able to offer loyal customers a discount on an upgrade in these instances.
