My HR has switched itself off a couple of times in the last two days. It will reset when plugged in but that’s not really a solution. Any ideas?

I understand from reading a previous post of yours that you have tried restarting your Alta HR several times. (You had forgotten the charger button) But it appears that restarting has still failed to keep your Alta HR from randomly shutting off. I’m sure this can be quite frustrating. If several restarts still fail to resolve this issue are you sure your Fitbit Alta is getting an adequate charge? It might be helpful to make sure your chargers gold colored contacts as well the gold colored contacts on your Alta HR are clean.
