Getting elliptical instead of walking

I am getting elliptical when I go for a walk.  It also does not count the full minutes of the walk.  Yesterday, I walked 40 minutes.  Said I used the elliptical for 29 minutes.  How do I get it back to say I am walking and the full minutes of the walk?
