This is the error message I get when adding someone and the username came straight from the friend

Looks as if you where sending by using the users name. Try going to their profile and request friend. 

Or if they are a personal friend you can simply send them a link, through the app, text, or your email program. to your profile.   

 

No I do not have an answer but I have you several workarounds.
