Alta HR will not sync with Xiaomi Mi A3

After successfully setting up my Alta HR it now refuses to sync with my Xiaomi Mi A3. I've tried everything: reseting the bracelet through the charging cable button, unpairing and pairing again, reinstalling the app, turning bluetooth off and on, restarting the phone, clearing the data.
 It just keeps spinning and eventually fails. While trying to repair the numbers always appear, but most of the time the pairing will fail as well.
The phone is runing a version of Adnroid above 7 and is not in the blacklist listed here: https://www.fitbit.com/global/us/technology/compatible-devices

What could be wrong with it?

Update: trying to sync with an Iphone works just fine, so it does appear to be a problem with android phones. Is there any confirmation on that? Because through the info available about compatibility I'm led to believe it should work with my phone...

It's been a week of pure frustration trying to get this thing to work with android, without success. And also zero responses here... Well, at least I can say I've learned what product to never buy again.
