Bug report: renaming an exercise

Replies are disabled for this topic. Start a new one or visit our Help Center.
The fitbit app on my phone automatically recorded that I ran. Actually I was playing table tennis. I went to rename this and always get the error that fitbit.com is not available. I can rename other activities to table tennis with no problem .

@Harrykarr From my experience, you should be able to rename any auto-recognized exercise in the Fitbit app, or on the web activity dashboard. If you select the activity in the app, look for a pencil icon i the corner to hit, and then enter the new activity name. I hope this helps. Let me know if you're still having difficulties with this.

Thanks very much for the response. That method works for other activity renames but not run to table tennis. I suspect the reason is that the run has a map associated with it. A quick fix would be for the web site to handle the error and not send back that fitbit.com is not available. The problem occurs 100% of the time. I can repro it anytime.

@Harrykarr yes it is a bug and not only for autorecognized exercises. Simple steps to reproduce:

1. Open Exercise app

2. Start Run (but wait for GPS to connect)

3. Stop Run

4. Sync with mobile app

5. Go to the Run exercise and edit it (pencil icon, in newest version of Android app we are finally able to edit manually recorded exercises)

6. Change to "Table tennis"

7. Result:

8. so maybe try to change to Basketball:

Same error. It looks like it is impossible to change GPS activity into non-GPS activity.

@charleskn it is a bug.

I'm seeing similar when my rowing erg session is autorecognised as a swim. When I attempt to edit using the Pencil icon the text input field doesn't become active to launch the screen keyboard.

I reclassify the exercise on the website dashboard, resync the app data, and then the app will allow me to rename the exercise as expected.

It's been happening since the last app upgrade to version 3.71

Hey @t.parker I had not noticed that Android allows us to rename manually recorded exercises. Certainly the error that fitbit.com is not available is either a bug, or a configuration issue. @Harrykarr is trying to rename an auto-recognised activity, but has the same error as you displayed, which is good from a bug tracking perspective. I qualify my statement about this being a bug, because I haven't had this issue with renaming auto-recognized activities on my Android device.

I am assuming that you were all able to rename activities previously? Did this begin after the latest app upgrade, as mentioned by @CasperB ?

@charleskn the recent Android app brought that feature that now users can not only rename but also edit activities in some limited scope (something iOS app supported for very long time). Have you tried to rename activity with GPS data? There is no problem if activity doesn't include a map.

@t.parker I'll have to give it a try. I can understand not being able to rename a GPS activity to a "non-GPS" activity as the system doesn't know where to put the GPS data. This is not a bug, but what is often called a "feature". A better way to handle that specific case would be to warn the user that the GPS data will be lost, and either block the change, or allow the change and dump the GPS data. Redesigning the back-end for non-GPS activities to hold GPS data would be potentially difficult and could break things.

@charleskn the message doesn't tell what is going wrong which is a bug but I believe in the context of Fitbit we can call it "feature" 😆 The behaviour you described is exactly how it works for me on Garmin and Suunto watches. There is a warning informing that some data will be lost and but it still can be done if user confirms the change. Fitbit shows communication error and tells to try again later. Not exactly the best user experience.

From other "features" try to export TCX file from Interval Workout (with map) in the Android app. This "feature" has been there for many months 😄

@t.parker So I manually created a "workout", walk with GPS and an elliptical session. I confirmed that not only could I rename them all (with the GPS limitations), but I could do so multiple times. However, @Harrykarr is getting the server error when trying to rename an auto-recognized workout.

@Harrykarr when you view the "run", does it have GPS data associated with it? I have never tried auto-recognizing a run, so I don't know if the device GPS gets turned on to add GPS data to the run.

@charleskn I got this error with manually recorded exercise.

It was an auto recognized run with GPS.

OK, the GPS track explains the "error". I am looking to see if there is a way to turn off the GPS for auto-recognized activities.

The work-around, I suppose, is to delete the run and manually enter the data into an activity for table tennis. Not the most elegant solution 😏
