Bugs with the Food Log on the app

The Android app seems to get worse with every update. I really dread using it now.

Many times when trying to change a portion size it'll change right back to the previous number. i.e. I'll pull up "Raisin Bran" and it'll have 1 cup pre-entered. I change the 1 to a 2 (or a 1.5, or any number other than 1) and it immediately re-enters the 1. I try deleting the 1 first, backspacing over it, highlighting it and typing over it, nothing works. Eventually it'll work, after dozens of tries. This used to happen occasionally and only to certain entries, but now it happens much more frequently and to more items.

Also, after adding items, many times I'll have to open and close the food log to get it to update the calorie count.

When entering a search term from the food log, it starts searching and brings up a list of results—then suddenly the search term disappears and it switches over to the "recent" tab and I have to re-enter the search.

These things have been happening for a long time and I keep hoping each update would fix them, but they remain.

Hello @pjfarr.

Thanks for  sharing all of those occurrences.

In this case the first thing I'd recommend is that you make sure that you are on the latest version of the app, which is 2.88 at this moment. You can click here to read more about it.

In addition to that, I'd like to ask what phone is it that you are using and if you have had the chance to try to run the app on a different device to see if it continues to happen.

Look forward to your reply.

@LanuzaFitbit

My apps are kept up to date, but I noticed yesterday the Fitbit app was just updated to 2.88 so it's now currently up-to-date, but wasn't when I originally posted (but at that point I would've been using the last update version directly before 2.88). Issue is still present in 2.88.

My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S5 NEO, running Android 7.0. I've tried the app on my tablet (Galaxy Tab E, with Android 7.1) and the same thing happens.

Hello @pjfarr.

Thanks for letting me know about all of that.

I have brought this up to our team so that it can be looked into. As soon as we have anything new to share on the matter we'll be sure to let you know.

In addition, could you share some screenshots of everything that you have mentioned?

Let me know if there are any other questions.

@LanuzaFitbit

I'll see if I can take a video of the main issue (numbers changing back when trying to enter new numbers). How would I post a video here?

@LanuzaFitbit

Here's a video of what I was talking about.

The entry starts off with a "12" pre-entered. I want to change it to a "3". I keep trying to backspace over the 12 and you'll see the 12 keeps coming back. This goes on for several seconds (all I'm doing is hitting the backspace key the whole time). Finally, I manage to type in the 3—and it immediately changes back to 12.

Well done @pjfarr  for catching that. People have been complaining about this for years. The problem with the search list for me is when scrolling through a long list I tend to mistakenly select something then when you dismiss it you don't go back to the search list. You have to start over from the beginning .  This is also a long standing gripe with users.

Frankly I don't understand @LanuzaFitbit seeming not to understand your problem as if it's a recent occurrence.

@Lilbiddy  @LanuzaFitbit

So it's not just me. Yay. Do you know how many times I've had to restrain myself from throwing my phone at the wall out of sheer frustration with those reappearing numbers? But then, why take it out on my phone, lol. I hate using the mobile app because of this and other annoying glitches and only use it if I'm away from my laptop.

The recently launched new-and-improved food log on the website worked awesomely on my phone (the old log did not play nice on mobile browsers) so I started using that and avoided the app. Then, as you likely know, they took down the new log due to technical issues, promising it will be back soon. Once it is, I think I'll just use that on my phone.

Hello @pjfarr and @Lilbiddy.

@pjfarr Thanks for sharing that video! I definitely helps to get a better understanding.

@Lilbiddy Could you share the same information that @pjfarr did? The device that you are using, the app version and the Android version that you are running.

Look forward to your reply.

Sorry @LanuzaFitbit, I forgot to reply.

Sony M4 aqua, android 5, current app version 2.91. This has been occurring for as long as I have had my charge 2 so that's almost two and a half years.

I know there have been comments about this in the past but as usual nothing changes.

I sure would like to know what these "bug fixes and improvements" are they keep pushing every few weeks. The app contains all the same bugs and annoyances it did when I first started with Fitbit 2 yrs ago. In fact, this particular glitch (numbers changing by themselves) actually seems worse now after the last few updates. It used to only happen with certain items but now happens all the time, making the app pretty well useless for entering food. I've started using my phone's memo app to jot down what I eat while out, then I copy everything from there to the web log when I can access my laptop.

Workaround (50%effexctive): click in to the serving size box, make sure curser is at the right end of the text. scroll up so that the serving size  box is 1/2 or more covered by to edge of the screen. At this time the food buttons are visible on the bottom of ur screen (depending on screen size I suspect) and keyboard is open. Now the serving size does not go back to last used right away, so with a couple hits on backspace  delete old and enter new value and hit log button. If u do it quick enough or a couple of times it will work, like a cheat code in old game councols. Lol

Other posts suggested logging out and back in to the app. That did not work for me.

I hope this helps.

Logging food in webdash board is the best, and they almost destrid it a few weeks ago.

Thanks for the information @gramfit but unfortunately I only have a small phone so I tend to only use the app as the web dashboard etc is too difficult to use on a small device. But hopefully it will help someone else.

@gramfit @Lilbiddy @pjfarr thank you for your replies and sorry for the delay in mine. As @LanuzaFitbit mentioned the team is checking why this may be happening. I do appreciate your patience while this is resolve.

Keep me posted.

Hi!

This is consistently happening to me too, and it has been for several months. My phone is a Samsung Galaxy S9 with Android Pie and the most recent Samsung software update, and my Fitbit app version is 2.93.

Thanks for looking into this for all of us!!

🙂

This is still an issue that I am encountering every day. What is the current status of this bug fix?

Best Answer

@goode4all  As I have been aware of this for 5 years and it's been 2 years that the team have supposedly been looking into this I expect that the current status is nonexistent.

Best Answer

Seriously, I don't think they even have a "team". I'm a software developer myself, and watching bugs like this go unaddressed is making my blood boil. I'd get called in on a weekend for this kind of thing, but these people just ignore it for literally years.

2 years on and this big hasn't been solved yet. It is so unnerving to have these quantities change all the time...
