Your Versa communicates with your phone via Bluetooth. For the Fitbit app to synchronize and update the data collected by your Versa, the bluetooth in the phone needs to be ON and your phone needs to be connected to the internet either via wifi or your cellular connection. You could use your computer or your tablet instead to synchronize if you prefer.
I suppose you could keep the bluetooth in your phone turned off for most of the day and only turn it on when you want to download the data from your Versa. Most of the information you might want to see is available directly on your Versa. However, sleep information and exercise details need to be viewed on the phone app. Several of the Apps that you can load onto your Versa will require a connection to your phone as well. So, if your bluetooth is Off, those apps won't work.
Versa SE, Charge 2, Samsung Galaxy S10+
