Fitbit alta not receiving text messages from messages app

Hi I just recently bought a fitbit alta and I am not receiving text messages fully on the alta. I have a galaxy s7 phone and the app I use for texts is the Samsung messages app. All I get as a notification for texts is that I have a new message using that app, despite having it set up for both sender information action and text content.

The fitbit works as it should using the messages + application, but I want to keep using the messages app. 

I've tried troubleshooting using all the above methods but nothing works.
