Fitbit app doesn't display phone contacts with Fitbits

Hi everyone, please help me. 

I joined fitbit about 3 months ago and was able to add my wife as a friend by searching for her username. I have tried over and over again to sync my phone contacts to fitbit so I can add more of my friends but it only shows up with 1 person that says they don't have fitbit. It doesn't show me any of my contacts that have fitbit! How can I fix this problem? I want friends to challenge and motivate me but I can't seem to get it working right. 

P.S. I don't have a Facebook account.

Is it true that I have to have their email used to create a fitbit account in order to add them? There is no way to add someone by phone number?

It's easier if they already have a Fitbit account. You have a Fitbit account, so by sending them that link, they can add you if they have an account, too. I've never used the phone number feature.
