Google Sign In shows "this account already exists on your device" error

I'm attempting to log in on Android to sync a brand new Charge 5. Here's what I'm experiencing:

  • Fitbit app installed on a moto g7 plus, Android v10
  • Tap "Sign in with Google"
  • "Sign In" prompt shows
  • Verify identity using fingerprint sensor / PIN
  • Shown a "Sign in with your Google Account" input for "Email or phone"
  • Input email address
  • Error shows on input: "This account already exists on your device" and cant proceed

I'm aware the gmail account already exists on my device... that's why I'm trying to sign in with it. If I remove that account from my device, I get further along and have to tap through a lot of standard "linking your phone with this account" type stuff, but ultimately always end up getting sent back to the Google login, which then as you might expect, fails again with the same error because the account has been linked to my device.

I've even tried making a new Google account, but encounter the same problem: I'm sent back to the login at the end, and can't proceed due to the account "already existing on your device". For the record this is my first fitbit, none of these email addresses have ever been associated with an existing fitbit account.

Just spent £130 on a device that as far as I can tell is now rendered completely unusable because of the app / Google sign in integration being complete **ahem**. Really disappointing. Can someone help me out before I'm forced to return this stupid **ahem**ing watch?

Having the same issue. I've had an account and logged out today because it was acting up. It forced me to link with Google and now won't sign in.

I'm hitting this issue too. I just spent a chunk of time setting up an android emulator to install the fitbit app because there seems to be an issue with the iOS app not being able to add children to the family account so I can set up an Ace 3. Finally got an android device set up and now Fitbit won't let me sign into the app on the android device. This is crazy.

Hi everyone, and welcome to our new members.

Thanks for letting us know you're having trouble registering your account.

The issue you're describing can sometimes happen if you haven't recently updated your Google Play Services. For instruction on how to update, see https://support.google.com/googleplay/answer/9037938?hl=en.

In order to "Sign in with Google" you'll need a Google Play Services version 23.15 or higher.

If after checking for an update, you're still having trouble, please let us know what type of Phone and version of Android you're using.

We hope this helps!

Either the Google Play Services updated since last night and that made it start working or something else changed, because I tried again last night and it didn't work but just now it did.

@daytonb Thank you very much for the reply. I am glad to read it is working again and you were able to log in.  Let us see if it is solved for the rest as well. Thanks again.

same for me with Moto z3 -- have tried every suggestion -- change passwords, update play services, etc.

I solved this same issue by getting on my laptop and finding where I could sign up for an account on Fitbit itself... unrelated to Google; no app, just the Fitbit website. Once I was a Fitbit user, I went back to sign into the app through the Fitbit option (yes, I know it did not allow that before, but it did once i signed up elsewhere), and I got in that way. I am seen by Fitbit as a pre-google user now, and I'm getting prompts to switch to Google now & then, but I will ignore them until I'm confident this will all work out, or until my 3 free months is up, and if i have trouble then, I will not continue.

NOW I'm having trouble syncing. I bought this on vacation hoping I could use it while kayaking, etc, but instead I have spent the first 3 days of my vacation extremely frustrated, a half a day driving to a best buy for geek help (he suggested the solution I described above), and wasting time I should be relaxing or hiking. Ironic. I am currently torn between getting this thing working and forgetting I own it until I get back home.

Good luck to all, I hope my solution works for future users looking this up.
