I have a Pixel 7a phone and a brand new Pixel Watch 2 (which I'm still exploring).
On the phone, I have the Fitbit app installed. On the watch, I have the Fitbit Exercise app installed.
Before I go hiking, I want to use the Fitbit Exercise app on my watch, select the Hike activity, and track everything that way. I want the highest accuracy possible for all measurements, but I also want to keep battery usage low on the watch, because some hikes can take a long time.
My question is: if I turn off GPS on the watch, to save battery, will the app be able to use GPS on the phone to track location accurately? Or is it mandatory to turn on GPS on the watch for accurate route recording?
Alternate question: if I use the Fitbit app on the phone instead, and select the Hike activity there instead, I assume it will use GPS on the phone. But is it going to get all the other measurements (heart rate) in the same way as if I was using the watch app for this purpose?
