I regularly do a walk which is 3 mile long, my fitbit alta records it as approx 1.2 miles and the map is way off, shows me in the lake rather than walking around it!

How are you are getting a map with an Alta?  I didn't that had GPS, built-in or connected GPS.

Before posting, re-read to see if it would make sense to someone else not looking at your Fitbit or phone.
