Pixel Watch Didn't Count Steps, But Tracked Mileage and Zone Minutes

Hi, basically what my title says.  This morning I did my usual commute, and when I got to the office my watch said I only had 83 steps, but it accurately reported (based on my history) that I walked around 1.4 miles, and hit 38 zone minutes.  If it hadn't recorded anything I would find that more normal because I would think it was malfunctioning overall, but not recording steps while recording everything else is very weird.  Has anyone else experienced this issue?

I also have a Pixel Watch (original) and Pixel 6 phone. I've routinely seen steps drop away in front of my eyes. While walking my dog a bit ago I lost 100 steps when the watch synced with the app. Worse, I've been doing some backpacking trips and the step count AND mileage are totally wrong. We hiked 4.5 miles, gained about 1500 feet in elevation, and my step count was fewer than 9,000 and my mileage at 3.6 and my floors only 35. Yet somehow all of that totaled 3600 calories! The calorie burn was probably fairly correct given the weight I was carrying and the climbing we did.

My fitbit is useless as a pedometer and I'm looking forward to buying something else. The problem has been going on for nearly a year.

That is interesting; thank you so much for responding!  This is the first time I've ever seen this happen, and I noticed because the walking portion of my daily commute is pretty much identical day to day.  And I still don't understand how my miles were captured, but not the steps.  But it's good to know that I'm not alone!  I'm sorry you are also experiencing issues.

Hello @GoddessOfCarbs

Thanks for letting us know about the issue you're seeing with your Pixel Watch (original). I have both Pixel Watch 2 & 3 and haven't see a similar issue with step tracking.

By any chance, did you have GPS turned on when you did your commute? If so, that would explain why miles were captured.

For now, please submit this issue using the Feedback feature in both the Fitbit and Pixel Watch apps. The Feedback section for the Pixel Watch app is in the Tips & support section. For Fitbit:

  • Tap your picture in the upper right of the Today page in the Fitbit app
  • Tap Feedback in the menu that opens
  • Complete the prompts and submit

The feedback reports are received by the team for review.
