Setting up notifications (step-by-step)

To set up notifications on your Android device:

  1. Make sure that your mobile device is compatible with notifications by visiting http://www.fitbit.com/devices. Notifications are available for Android devices running OS 4.3 or later.
  2. If you have a Fitbit Blaze, swipe to Settings and make sure Notifications is set to On. If you have a Fitbit Blaze hold the top right button for a couple seconds to make sure Notifications is set to On.
  3. On your mobile device, make sure Bluetooth is enabled.
  4. Go to Settings > Do Not Disturb and make sure these settings aren't turned on. They prevent the device from sending notifications to your tracker.
  5. Put your tracker within 20 feet (6 meters) of your mobile device for the rest of the setup process. Note that you'll only receive notifications on your tracker when your mobile device is within this radius.
  6. Open the Fitbit app on your mobile device and tap your tracker tile at the top of your mobile dashboard.
  7. Tap the your tracker tile a second time and turn on the Always Connected option to improve the Bluetooth connection between your phone and tracker. Note that turning on this feature may cause the battery on your tracker to drain more quickly than normal.
  8. Tap Notifications, and choose the type of notification you want to set up. If you have an Alta, you can also choose whether you want to see the sender name or the sender name and the text message.
  9. Tap Enable Notifications and choose the app you want to receive notifications from. The app provided by your phone for calls, texts, and calendar events varies between mobile devices, however some common default apps are:
    • Phone app—Dialer
    • Text messaging (SMS) app—Messenger
    • Calendar app—Calendar

If your mobile device has OS 5.0 or later, you may need to configure the default text messaging and calendar apps by tapping Settings > More > Default SMS app or Settings > More > Default calendar app.

  10. If you previously set up notifications, tap Allow Notifications Access to reconfigure your notification settings.
  11. Check the box next to "Fitbit Notification Service" and in the notice that appears tap OK
  12. If you're experiencing slow or delayed notifications, turn on Enable Notification Widget.
  13. If you want to ensure that all notifications sent to your tracker are encrypted, on the Notifications page tap Require encryption. For more information, see Are notifications sent from my Android device encrypted?
    1. Open the Fitbit app again to start the bonding process that allows your mobile device to send encrypted data to your tracker.
    2. If the bonding process is not successful, tap Re-enable and follow the onscreen instructions to attempt the bonding process again.
    3. If you cannot successfully complete the bonding process, you can choose to continue with unencrypted communications.
  14. If you're using Android Marshmallow, make sure you grant the Fitbit app access to the requested features of your mobile device. For more information, see Why do I receive access requests from the Fitbit app on my Android mobile device?
  15. To verify that set up was successful, look at the list of Bluetooth-connected devices on your mobile device. Your tracker name should appear.
