Sleep data with new layout

I suppose there was an update. The app presents sleep data differently.  Have others noticed this?

I miss seeing how long episodes of awake, light, REM and deep sleep are

I wasn't writing for publication, Rich_Laue.  I'm dyslexic and have no trouble reading and understanding dense text.  Pay attention to the points made.  And yes, there are a couple folks who have gone overboard on the rant posts but that doesn't diminish the fact that there are many, in fact the virtual totality of others expressing their distinct dislike.  And my point that one can count the number of positive responses on one hand with fingers remaining stands.  Your glowing assessment stands in stark contrast to virtually everybody else's assessment.  So, I guess the Google brain trust can rejoice over having made one person happy with their "achievement."

Oh, and I forgot to add, Rich_Laue, no previous update prior to last September took away information. That users no longer view sleep detail over past days is mind-numbingly stupid since granular information is what is of value when working with sleep problems as just one example. And I forgot to note my having had a good laugh over your "looks more professional" plus point. It obfuscates and removes data but it looks good to you. What a plus.

Well, I, for one, will not wait a few years to get used to something that I pay for, what an insult to our intelligence. Your response was arrogant and demeaning. When the changes were made on the previous version, prior to this change, I was happy with the graphs and the way the interface worked. This change is not for the better, it does not provide you with the same information.

I am an individual who appreciates updates and process changes, when they enhance the product. Not when they are a downgrades to the previous version.

I also want to add, that I have also been using fitbit for ten years, and was happy with all the upgrades until this one.

Fitbit won't let me see any of the 23 pages of comments. I van only see yours.

@Rich_Laue one thing for sure, this doesn't look "more professional" but opposite, like done in kindergarden with a pack of same colourtonr crayons, the nonsense take of replacing totaly fine working bargraphs with these spaghetti graphs is just mindblowing...

ps: must be a reason why Apple, Garmin, Polar all using bargraphs...

The new sleep summary is horrible. It doesn't give a sleep score, there are no benchmarks, and it's hard to read. It also seems to be less accurate. Please bring back the old sleep summary, this was really a foolish change! As a person with sleep apnea and a CPAP machine, I really counted on the good information I got from my Fitbit every morning. Please change it back!

The new sleep data layout is dire by comparison to the old one. It's lacking in any time accuracy. Plus the amount of time it tells me I'm awake is absurd. Anybody else have these problems or am I being too picky?

Best Answer

I agree with you.

Thanks for the tip on the bargraphs. It is helpful to me.

Best Answer

Please change this sleep layout back. It's not user friendly and I don't think it's reflecting accurately. The design team needs to please take a look at all these comments and topics. The general consensus is it's awful. Thanks!

I'm 100% with you. I suffer from sleep apnea. When I see my doctor every month, we would scroll through the bargraphs to evaluate my situation. Now I have nothing useful to show him.

Who is in charge of Fitbit graphic design? That person needs to be replaced. The latest update is just horrendous. I can't see my sleep pattern clearly anymore. It looks like something you'd see in a government report on the budget. I started with Fitbit 2 years ago and the user interface was attractive and easy to read. Not anymore. Boo Fitbit!

I was able to revert to the old UI and sleep view by uninstalling the latest version and using a repository to install an older version, in my case version 3.88. As long as you aren't set up for your device to automatically update apps you should be able to use it indefinitely.

The file type name for android installer packages is not allowed in the community, which is a good indicator that the company doesn't want you to know that their information that you "can't go back to an older version" is blatantly false. You can, as long as you use a trusted software source and set your device to allow installs from non-play store sources. This is openly discussed on the subreddit. A quick web search should allow you to access more detailed instructions promptly.

I sent a message to Fitbit and they directed to a link on how to read sleep stages.   I told them to read the comments on Fitbit community.  I pointed out that all comments are against this update and Fitbit is losing customers.

Below is a reply from Fitbit:

Sorry to hear that. This is not the experience we want you to have. We're constantly striving to improve Fitbit products and services, which sometimes results in existing products changing. The feature to bring back the old sleep summary page is currently being reviewed by our moderators. You may vote for it here to show your interest: https://community.fitbit.com/t5/Product-Feedback/Bring-back-the-old-sleep-summary-page/idi-p/5570732. The entire redesign is intended to bring the interface into Google's general aesthetic, which is surely one chosen by the kind of people who would paint over a hardwood floor with glossy white.

as far as I can tell the standard is to take something that works perfectly well and looks fine, replace it with something extremely ugly and less functional without warning and then declare victory by claiming to all and sundry that whatever they changed was in dire need of an overhaul.

"by the kind of people who would paint over a hardwood floor with glossy white"

IanBell, that is just too perfectly appropriate along with the "Google's generic aesthetic" comment.  From what I've read that they posted it seems the bright idea is to take a user's data and make recommendations or offer motivations while at the same time unburdening them with real data, you know, the stuff that's truly of value.  As I said in another post, if people need a life coach to help motivate them, hire one.  But don't destroy the basic functionality and information that made this a solidly useful application prior to the 4.x, so-called update.  That was worse than bad but what they did with the sleep portion is in every respect a nightmare for people who put all of that granular data to good use.

Rich_Laue. I spent hours reading every single complaint. There is way more than a handful of haters. I found LESS than a handful of likes. Yes. I have seen repeat complaints, but honestly, a lot of people were responding to what others said. I miss the useful format we previously had. You have debated me before on this. Good for you that the changes suit YOUR needs. The majority want OUR needs recognized. I can no longer use Fitbit as a tool for my monthly doctor appointments and still hope that the company can at least compromise with SOMETHING useful.

Hello everyone. Thanks for your feedback regarding the new layout of the sleep data. I have the old format on my other smartphone and I do miss the fact that you could see the sleep history altogether. However, all of the information that was previously shown is still there. When you entered the tile on the previous layout it showed 3 other tiles along with the sleep score

  • Sleep Score at the top
  • Time Asleep
  • Deep and REM (Sleep stages)
  • Restoration

Now when you enter the sleep log, all of that information is displayed right away. Sleep score you find below the time you spent asleep. Below you find the sleep stages graph. When you compare the old sleep stages graph with this one, it is not that different; just color wise. I will try to post a screenshot later on. Then the restoration data, you find below under "estimated oxygen variation" and your "sleeping heart rate". I know the information is now displayed differently and it takes more taps to compare data between days let alone weeks. What I would suggest, would be making screenshots of the logs and then comparing them in your gallery. Hopefully our team in charge of the app will take all of this feedback in consideration. We shall see how the app keeps on being developed. I appreciate you taking the time to share your opinion. Have a nice day!

Thank you, RodrigoMFitbit.  Honestly this is the first constructive response from moderators I've encountered.  And thank you for the guidance on finding data.  That said, what was compactly and parsimoniously presented prior is now scattered across screens with the sleep stages totally disassociated with the flow of a nights sleep.  If one is working with sleep issues understanding that flow represents the value of the data.  Before everything was pretty much right in front of you.  Now it's a mouse hunt to track it all down.  Honestly, when it previously was all together in a compact and very consumable form to now be required to capture screen shots in an attempt to assemble the same information makes absolutely no functional sense.  Again, thank you, but please forward that none of these changes constitute an improvement for assessing and monitoring one's sleep cycles.

OMG. I haven't been on the forums for a while since the big debate about the upgrade, where all our comments were deleted.

But now my sleep data suddenly is different. So I come to the forum to see if it's just me, and maybe I need to post a question. But lo and behold! There is already a thread with over 300 complaints about it! How did I assume 'user error' when OF COURSE it is just Google/Fitbit changing things again for ABSOLUTELY NO REASON!!! It's infuriating and given what we went through last time, just shows a total disregard and disrespect for users.

I finally found the percentages of sleep stages in the 'benchmark' tab. But what are all those dotted lines? Why can't you see everything on one page? Why are my 30 day average figs identical to 'benchmark'??? WHY make something so simple so complicated?!!!! I despair of this product 😞

To the bright cookies at fitbit getting paid waaaaayyy too much to do a rubbish job - the new sleep tracker display is RUBBISH!!!

The colours are ugly, you can't get any sleep insights or zoom in. It's just pointless.

Why did you change it when there was nothing wrong with the original one? The original one was PERFECT.

Change it back now!!

Why fix something if it ain't broke?????!!!!!

How about you have a version for the vision impaired and the old version for the rest of us. That helps both groups.

Samandduke.

How do we vote? I went to the link but just saw old complaints.
