Fitbit Update: 9/12/19
Hey all!
We're still investigating and working on a fix for this text notification issue on Android.
In addition to not receiving the correct text notification, we're now aware this is also affecting call notifications. Some of you may only see a previous caller's name and not the person actually calling you at the time you're receiving the notification.
When we have more information for a fix, we'll announce it here in this thread. Please stay tuned for updates!
Fitbit Update: 7/30/19
Hi everyone.
We're aware of these issues with receiving only the sender's name from your text messages. This appears to have started with the Fitbit for Android app version 3.0. If you're experiencing this yourself with your Fitbit device, please know we're working on a fix.
While our team investigates this further, we just ask for your patience. Once I have information for a fix, I'll make an announcement here on this thread.

For different Fitbit devices
The first step is to do a reset.
Look at the posts for how to do your "reset". For your specific device..
After that follow my suggested steps and your Fitbit will work properly.

You are not dumb, don't go back to a later version. Won't help.
See if this method works.
First step do a reset on your Fitbit.
Then go to your app on your phone.
Be sure to have your user name and password available.
Delete the app and do a reinstall
Once you are back into the app ,tap your picture, and tap your device, then scroll down to notifications and reset the ones you want on your device.
Then all should be working properly.

After four months I'm sure I'm not the only one that tried resetting the device and reinstalling the app. That didn't resolve the issue.
You're not dumb. You can't think nobody already tried that.

No, i am Not dumb and I DID go back to a previous update (2.95), works fine for me. I have taken auto update off also.
But I won't be recommending fitbit to anyone and I am currently looking at other brands.

I have been in contact with fitbit about being refunded for a product that doesn't do what it advertises. Their response was to follow the trouble shooting advice ( which doesn't work( and they don't refund 45 days after purchase! Great company! Not!

Yeah, I had also tried the obvious delete the app and reset the tracker on more than one occasion to no avail with my Pixel 3 and Alta over the past four months.
As a few others have suggested I went back to version 2.95 this morning (and turned off auto updates) and lo and behold, I received a text notification on my Alta! With the correct name and message!
It is an absolute abomination to have go back four months to get the app to work as advertised, but the indifferent/incapable idiots in charge at least had that build working correctly.

Just curious, when you do the reset do you lose all your sleep and exercise history?

No, you're basically just rebooting it. Nothing is lost by rebooting it, but there is a process available that will clear the tracker. You don't need to bother with either because nothing works to fix this problem outside of loading an older version of the app.

I know nothing works, just curious if this was a factory reset or not and if the poor souls who tried it lost their history.
