XZ1 Notifications not working

Notifications are no longer working on my Sony Xperia XZ1 Compact.  They worked for about a day then flat out refused to notify on my phone.  Is there some sort of trick to get them going?

OS: Android 8.0.0

Model G8441

Running latest version of Fitbit app from Google Play Store.

Welcome to the Forums @RegsGrundies! At the moment, the Xperia XZ1 Compact is a non compatible device. You can take a look to the Compatible device list. 

Sometimes non compatible Android devices may meet all the requirements by the system allowing them to sync intermittently even when they are not listed. But, since it's not fully supported and tested by our development team this connectivity may not always be successful.

Try to download Fit Notifications from Google play. It helps getting notifications from the phone to your device

Okay, so now (for no apparent reason) the notifications are working intermitently.  Is there some sort of trick that's required to get notifications working on a regular basis?
