My Aria won't finish setup, has TLS error on 12.scale.www.fitbit.com

I have a new sense 2, and older charge 5, and an older still aria scale.

We got the standard "Guest" messages after stepping back on the scale for the first time in a couple years, and of course its larger than 8 lb difference.

Stupidly, I tried to set it up again, by doing a factory reset. This has basically turned it into a dumb scale now. It still measures weight but does not connect, and I can't finish the setup.

In the 2nd last setup step, it redirects the mobile browser to 12.scale.www.fitbit.com, which must have has a bad configuration, because that throws an SSL error.

12.scale.www.fitbit.com uses an unsupported protocol.

Is the Aria fully unsupported now, meaning I can no longer finish setting it up?

No, the Aria scales are fully supported, but how long have you had the scale?

Its 9 years old. The original Aria. I can't complete setup, so its not supported, because step 3 of setup where it goes to that site fails. I cannot connect to that site with a browser or the app at all. It just fails with the ssl version error.

Even the standard SSL testing tools fail. Openssl connect, ssl testing sites. So no, its not supported.

I'm not sure it's an issue of whether or not Fitbit supports the scales or not. I have an Aria Air that's almost as old as that and it's still supported.

Are you using a computer for setup or a phone?

A TSL error usually indicates that something is wrong with the WiFi connection, are you sure you're typing in everything in correctly?

How strong is your WiFi connection?

This phone shows zero issues on any other site, but hitting that specific URL from ANYTHING, my linux machine, my macs, my PCs, my ipads, my other iphones, ALL show an error connecting on TLS to that site. I tried it on like 6 different machines. I even switched to Firefox from Chrome to make sure it wasn't the client software.

The 12.scale.www.fitbit.com  site still has a DNS entry in Google's IP address space, but hitting it with openssl s_client connect shows that it's not even presenting a TLS server hello message. It's a broken site, probably misconfigured. I'm fairly knowledgeable around computers, since I've been a software architect for 42 years. Checking connectivity was my first debugging step. The phone is fine. The problem is the setup steps just don't work.

Oh, and the Aria Air only uses Bluetooth, doesn't have wifi and doesn't have a 5 step setup. It only ever connects to the phone. I bought one, since this Aria is now a doorstop. If i can get it to work, I can give it to my daughter for her house, but until I can get it to continue the setup past the "phone home and register this to your account" stage, its not going to work.

The setup sequence is quite different than an air. On the Aria 1, you connect to a captive Wifi on the device, feed it credentials for your wifi, then it joins your wifi, which it has done. Then it redirects your app to send the device identity, likely the serial number to Fitbit so it associates the aria with your account. That's the part that fails.

Ok I've asked around, will post back when I hear more. In the meantime, please try setting it up via computer as opposed to a phone or tablet.

You may also want to check and see if your browser is updated.

@JWThorne   I think you should contact Support and see if they have a definitive answer for you.  Fitbit discontinued the Aria in 2017, when it released the Aria 2.  There are posts from other Fitbit users who are having trouble setting up or getting updates for legacy devices -- pre-2019.
