My Fitbit is clearly on, I have the green lights on the back flashing. But the screen is black and it's not vibrating when I receive texts or phone calls. Earlier it looked as if it was frozen on the screen with the Fitbit logo (home screen), like if I was turning it on for the first time that day. But it was on for hours on my wrist. Then, just went black....

Hopefully this is just a software glitch, in which case a restart using the following procedure should sort it out:

Note that this doesn't always work so give it a few tries. If it still doesn't work after that then I would suspect a hardware problem and you should contact customer support via the following link:
If they can't fix it and you are still covered by warranty they usually offer to replace it. The warranty runs for 12 months from purchase (24 months if you are in Europe)
