Left side of the screen and dark red? It is a light sensor. It adjusts the brightness of the screen depending on the light conditions. If you are in a dark room and turn your hand to see the clock you can see that the screen turns darker a moment after switching on.
Interesting to read about the liquid in the charger. I had such a liquid in my old charger too but I didn't know what it is. It was no longer a problem for me because Fitbit sent me a new module and a new charger because the old one damaged the module.
