Today I achieved 10,000 based entirely on walking around (no treadmill, biking, elliptical, etc). I noticed that the distance measurement only read 5.90km. I checked that my stride length was still set under the settings as 70cm which it was. Now I can caluclate that 10,000stepsX70cm per step is 7km but my fitbit still only shows 5.9km. I even tried changing my stride length to some bogus number and back to try and 'force' a proper calculation to no avail. Anyone have any ideas as to how I can get the numbers to match?

Same here. I never seem to get anywhere close to the same measurement as my treadmill distance, or those that I've calculated with my car mileage or outside walks.I've tried futzing around with the stride length, but that only made things worse. Very frustrating.

I've had my stride tuned in for about 2 years, it is very close with all trackers.
If I can add a suggestion for those that have set their stride, a little math may help.
If more help is needed please leave a comment with your stride setting, true miles and fit it's reported mikes.
- First step change your stride to inches, metric is easier.
- Get the true miles walked
- The miles Fitbit repoeted
Now the math
- Miles walked / Fitbit miles reported = percentage off
- Current stride in inches * percentage off = new stride setting in inches.
Example
- Fitbit stride set to 2 feet 3 inches
- 2 * 12 + 3 = 27
- Current stride in inches = 27
- True walk 2 miles
- Fitbit reported 1.6 miles
- True miles / reported miles = percentage off
- 2 miles / 1.6 miles = 1.25
- Set stride * percentage off = new setting
- 27 * 1.25 = 33.75
- 33.75 = 2 feet 11 inches
In this example I would set the stride in Fitbit as 2 feet 11 inches.
By doing the above I've helped many both on Fitbit and Facebook
