SmartTrack will automatically recognize a few activities (Walk, Run, Outdoor Bike, Elliptical, Sport, Aerobic Workout), but for the cycling machine at the gym, you'll need to select "spinning" as your exercise option.

I would say that Workout will be indeed the best exercise for any activity that involves genearl body movement as this will give you stats as calories burned, heart rate and steps which is what one would mainly care about when doing these exercises.
