Which mode are you using to track you bike ride? Only the connected GPS mode will show distance.

Don't know if or how well auto detect works. I always set up rides manually. Have your phone with you. Fitbit app open and synced. Then navagate to exercise on the watch. Click Bike and connect to phone. Only when the connection shows green bars, are you good to go. You can click go, pause, and stop from there. I sometimes have to back out of the biking mode and re sinc the phone app and try again to get green bars.
If you happen to have a newer Samsung phone, Samsung health has a cool bike tracker too. I use both at the same time. Samsung health actually pauses and resumes when you stop and go. Fitbit keeps going when you're stopped. Happy riding.:-)
