Inaccurate step counter

My Fitbit Blaze is undercounting steps compared to my friend's fitbit surge. Today we went to the rodeo together. We went the same places did the same things and were in stride together. Her calculated 10,000 steps whereas mine only calculated 5,000 steps. I am not sure how the two could be this far off in step counts? I have been wondering if my fitbit has been undercounting steps for a while, but did not realize how off it appears to be. I have restarted it, but it doesn't seem to have done anything. Any suggestions? Thanks!

A couple of things you can do and check.

1. Have you checked your counter by walking, say, 100 steps and see what it says?

2. If the above shows up with a number that is way off, you can check the setting for dominant/non-dominant hand. The dominant hand setting will make it less sensitive and if you have it set there and wore the tracker on your non-dominant hand then it would definitely undercount your steps.

My blaze is undercounting, also.

I've played with the dominant/non dominant setting, but it still undercounts.

I am a nurse and am constantly looking down at my patient roster while walking long distances or I have my arms full carrying supplies, and while doing so I do not swing my arms. None of those steps track. I also walk a lot of short distances, grabbing supplies, pulling meds, washing hands, gloving, going to computer, walking back to pt. etc. All of this can take place in a 10 foot radius. I will be almost continuously moving, twisting, bending, walking, but since I am stopping and starting every few steps, none of it tracks. VERY ANNOYING.

What is the fix? I do not have this issue when I wear my Vivofit. Everything tracks with that. I bought a Blaze to get texts. I do not want to go back to my Vivofit.

I have tried the mentioned recommendations and found that it is set on the correct hand (non-dominant). When I tested out the step counting periodically throughout the day yesterday and this morning I found that when I and holding things in the hand my fitbit is one (such as a spiral or laptop) it is not counting my steps. When my hands were free of items it was counting steps, though it might be off by 1 or 2. This would account for my steps being off at the rodeo, as I was holding a student's hand and switching sides periodically throughout the day. Is there something that fitbit can do to adjust this? I am wondering how many steps per day my fitbit is missing now. Not carrying things in my non-dominant hand is not an option and quite frankly a bit silly. Thanks!!
