I took my new Fitbit out of its packaging this morning, it originally shoed the blue diamond motif and then the screen went blank, I have been charging it for 90 minutes but it is still not showing anything, and the back of it is starting to get hot - does it need a full charge ?.

It should charge for 1.5 to 2 hours and then you need to set it up

It should not be getting hot at all.
You might want to exchange it at the place of purchase
