Sleep Stages vs sleep pattern

I started tracking my sleep 2 days ago.  The first night went fine and yesterday morning I woke up to see my sleep in sleep stages, with light, deep and REM sleep showing.  This morning I woke up to a totally different graph showing only sleep patterns.  I also woke up to my phone telling me that the Fitbit app had updated and needed a phone restart, which I did but it still only shows it in pattern.  I'm assuming the update wouldn't make the app go backwards, the sleep stages was a newer more improved thing, correct?  So what's the deal and how do I get my sleep stages back?

Thank you!

Hi @pbebow! I'm glad to see you in the Community Forums! 😄

I'm sorry you're having problems with Sleep Stages not showing up consistently.

There are a few scenarios where you might see your sleep pattern (which shows your time asleep, restless, and awake) instead of sleep stages:

  • If you slept in a position that prevented your device from getting a consistent heart-rate reading or wore it too loosely. For best results, wear your device higher on your wrist (about 2-3 finger widths above your wrist bone). The band should feel secure but not too tight.
  • If you used the Begin Sleep Now option in the Fitbit app (instead of simply wearing your device to bed).
  • If you slept for less than 3 hours.
  • If your device’s battery is critically low.

Also, since your device needs at least 3 hours of sleep data to estimate your sleep stages, so you won’t see sleep stages for shorter naps. This is just for you to keep that in mind.

The app update won't make your previous sleep records to convert from Sleep Patterns to Sleep Stages but hopefully you won't have a problem with this again.

Let me know if you need more help with this!

Thank you so much for your response! And that makes total sense... My battery was low! It is charging now and I'll see how it goes tonight! Thanks again!
