Steps/Miles not accurate

Last week on two separate occasions I walked 16k+ steps. The step count was within 500 from one day to the next, but miles were recorded as 6.49 on one day and 

8.63 on the next. It makes me question the overall accuracy of​ the device.

May we have a little more information? 

I'll assume you where using a tracking function, was it with or without the connected GPS.?
